Rovaniemi Winter

Rovaniemi with kids in winter

Santa Claus receives visitors every day of the year, many animal rides take less than an hour and the zoo with Finland’s only polar bears is a day trip away. Here is what works with children, which age and height limits the tours set and how to deal with the cold.

Rovaniemi calls itself the Official Hometown of Santa Claus, and for many families that is the reason to come. Santa Claus Village lies 8 km north of the centre on the marked Arctic Circle line. Entrance is free, it is open every day of the year, and the year-round city bus line 8 runs there from the railway station and the centre in about half an hour. The city buses have space for prams. The busiest weeks are from late November to early January, so plan the Santa visit early in the day if you travel then.

Meeting Santa Claus

There are two places to meet Santa, and they work quite differently.

In Santa Claus Office you cannot book a time slot. If there is a queue, everyone waits, and a paid Christmas Express Pass lets families skip it at a fixed time. Children cannot hand over their own presents or notes during the meeting. Between 30 November 2026 and 3 January 2027 the office is open daily from 8:00 to 20:00. Santa also receives visitors free of charge in his red Christmas House in the village.

SantaPark is fully indoors, so normal indoor clothes are fine and there is a cloakroom at the entrance. The Elf School lasts about 25–30 minutes and every child leaves with a hat and a diploma. The corridors are flat and wide, which helps with a pushchair. Also in the village, Santa Claus’ Main Post Office stamps all mail with the Arctic Circle postmark. Our pages on Santa Claus Village and SantaPark go into more detail.

Animals and short rides

With younger children, short formats close to the village usually work better than a half-day safari with a long transfer. In Santa Claus Village the husky ride covers 2.5 km in about 7–12 minutes with a musher driving, and the reindeer farm on Joulumaantie runs a 2–3 km safari of about 30 minutes, both without a bus. Santa’s Pets in the village keeps reindeer, alpacas, sheep, goats, rabbits, a donkey and birds, and is open every day from 11:00 to 18:00.

On a self-drive husky safari children ride in the sled while the adults drive. One of these, the 5 km daytime safari, puts two adults on each team with the children in the sled. Combination tours bring together a reindeer ride of 400–500 m, a 500 m husky ride and either a meeting with Santa Claus or time in the village. They fill half a day with only a few minutes on each sled, which can suit younger children. Our pages on husky safaris and reindeer rides compare the lengths.

About 700 m from the village, Aurora Horses offers rides on Finnhorses, a breed the listing calls well suited for beginners. You spend about 30 minutes in the saddle and then warm up by the fire in a kota, in a group of at most five riders. The listing we recorded gives no minimum age, so check before you book.

Ranua Wildlife Park

Ranua Wildlife Park, 80 km from Rovaniemi, is home to Finland’s only polar bears: three females, two of which arrived in December 2025. Around 50 other Arctic and northern species live there, about 150 animals in all, including lynx, wolverines, wolves and a brown bear. The park opens every day at 10:00 and currently closes at 16:00. There is no lighting in the park, and the kiosks open only in summer, so bring snacks and plan the visit around midday in December.

In winter up to six buses a day run from Rovaniemi to Ranua, stopping in front of the park’s car park. Day tours with hotel pick-up take about five hours, with about three hours in the park. More on our page about Ranua Wildlife Park.

Keeping children warm

January and February are the coldest months, both averaging −10.3 °C at Rovaniemi airport, and the weather station outside town at Apukka records much lower minimums. The Lapland safety brochure asks parents to make sure children have warm clothing and warns that wind can cause frostbite even just below zero. Children sitting still in a sled cool down faster than adults who are moving, which is why one snowmobile operator carries them in a heated sleigh.

Dress in layers: wool next to the skin, fleece or wool in the middle and a windproof outer layer, with a hat, mittens and winter boots that leave room to wiggle the toes. Many activity companies in Rovaniemi rent thermal overalls, boots, balaclavas and mittens, but check each listing, as some tours charge extra for overalls. Our page on what to wear has a full list.

Snow play and short days

For free snow fun, the city keeps 20 ice rinks in parks around the centre, open to everyone from November or December until March. In Santa Claus Village, Snowman World has tubing, ice skating and a snow maze from 6 December 2026, and Santa’s Snowtubing runs daily from 3 December. Sledging is not allowed in the Ounasvaara ski area, but its Rendi Park has a small tubing hill of about 20 m, usually from late December. Keep children off the river ice: the city warns that the ice in the centre is dangerous throughout the winter. Ski tracks are for skiers only, so sledges stay off them too.

Plan outdoor time around midday. On 21 December 2026 the sun rises at 11:08 and sets at 13:22, with twilight from 09:16 to 15:14. That leaves a window of about six hours of usable light for animal visits and Ranua, while SantaPark and the Arktikum work at any hour.

Questions travellers ask

Is Santa Claus Village free to visit?

Yes. Entrance to the village and to Santa Claus Office is free. You pay only for the official photos or video of the meeting and for extras such as a fast-track pass.

Can we take our own photos with Santa Claus?

Not in Santa Claus Office in the village, where a photographer elf takes the pictures and you can buy them afterwards. In SantaPark you may use your own camera during the private meeting.

How far is Ranua Wildlife Park from Rovaniemi?

About 80 km, roughly an hour by road. Several buses a day run from Rovaniemi to Ranua in winter, and day tours with transfer take about five hours.

Do children need their own winter clothing on tours?

Many safaris lend thermal overalls and boots, but not all do, and some charge extra for them. Pack warm layers, woollen socks, a hat and mittens for every child, and check the listing of each tour.

What can we do with children on a very cold day?

Go indoors. SantaPark is underground and you can wear normal indoor clothes there, the Arktikum museum is in town, and the meeting with Santa in Santa Claus Office is indoors too. Several outdoor activities stop at very low temperatures anyway.
