From Rovaniemi you can reach a frozen canyon, a national park with an amethyst mine, a zoo with polar bears and an icebreaker on the sea, each within a day. Most of these trips take six to eight hours with a tour, which leaves the evening free for the northern lights. The table gives the distances, and the sections below explain what each trip involves.

Korouoma and its frozen waterfalls

Korouoma is a canyon about 30 km long, part of a fracture zone in the bedrock that formed hundreds of millions of years ago. In winter the streams running down its cliffs freeze into walls of ice, and Metsähallitus calls them the most magnificent frozen waterfalls in Finland. It is also the largest and best-known ice climbing site in the country. The best-known falls are the 60-metre Ruskeavirta and Mammutti, which is popular with beginners. How many falls form, and what shape they take, changes from year to year with rainfall and frost.

The most popular route starts at the Saukkovaara parking area. As you walk down into the canyon, Ruskeavirta is on the opposite side. Two 5 km loops start there, and the Koronjää day trail can be done on snowshoes in winter. Avoid the Piippukallio route in winter: its steep slopes are dangerous then.

Guided trips take about six to seven hours including the drive, and Visit Rovaniemi lists them from November to April. Most include winter clothing, a campfire and hot drinks, and the walk is around 4–6 km with slippery climbs and descents. Several operators set a minimum age: 8 on two of the tours, 5 on another. By car it is 100 km to the Koivuköngäs parking area and 115 km to Saukkovaara, both via road 81 towards Posio. A paid parking trial runs at Saukkovaara from 1 September 2026 to spring 2027; the other parking areas stay free. Mobile coverage in the canyon is limited, so carry a paper map.

The amethyst mine at Lampivaara

The Lampivaara amethyst mine lies inside Pyhä-Luosto National Park, about 5 km from the centre of Luosto. In winter there is no open road to it, so visitors ride the “Amethyst Pendolino”, a heated wagon pulled by a snow vehicle. On one of the guided trips you dig in the rock with the tools provided and can keep any amethyst small enough to fit in your closed fist.

Winter tours run from 1 November 2026 to 18 April 2027. In November there is a single departure from Tuesday to Saturday, from 1 December to 28 March 2027 the mine is open daily, and from 29 March it opens Monday to Saturday. It is closed on 24 December 2026. Luosto is about 115 km from Rovaniemi, north on main road 4 (E75) and then east on road 962 at Torvinen. The mine suggests the ski bus or a hire car for independent travel; the tours below include transport from Rovaniemi.

Pyhä-Luosto itself has the most impressive fells and gorges of central Lapland, according to Metsähallitus, with Noitatunturi as its highest peak and 150 km of maintained ski tracks in and around the park. Two restrictions matter in winter. The deep Isokuru gorge is a summer and autumn destination, and the Peurakero area is closed to visitors from 15 February to 31 May.

Riisitunturi and its snow-covered trees

Riisitunturi National Park is about two hours’ drive from Rovaniemi. The tour in our list walks among the snow-loaded trees the park is known for, often called snow monsters, and explains how the Arctic weather builds them up. It takes about eight hours, either in a guided small group with a campfire BBQ or as a self-guided option that includes only transport and clothing.

Ranua and Kemi

Two of the most popular trips have pages of their own. Ranua Wildlife Park, 80 km away, is home to Finland’s only polar bears, open daily, and best visited in the few hours of winter daylight. Kemi on the coast is the base for the icebreaker cruises: the Sampo sails from 18 December 2026 to 3 April 2027 and the Arktis from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027, both with ice floating in the sea when conditions allow. With the bus transfer from Rovaniemi that is a day of 10–11 hours.

Short trips close to town

If you have a car and only half a day, the Arctic Circle Hiking Area lies about 25 km north-east of Rovaniemi along road 4 (E75). You can walk to the rapids at Vaattunkiköngäs and Vikaköngäs, and in winter explore the forests and open marshes on skis or snowshoes. The trails are not maintained in winter, but the most popular ones are often packed down enough to walk. A bus from Rovaniemi stops at Vikajärvi, about 200 metres from the Vikaköngäs starting point, though construction work currently limits that starting point. Reindeer herders use the area, so keep your distance from any reindeer you meet.

Auttiköngäs, about 80 km from the centre on road 81, is named after a waterfall that drops into the gorge of the Auttijoki river and can be reached all year. The road to the parking area is maintained in winter, the 3.6 km nature trail suits snowshoes, and the Uittopirtti day hut stays open all year. Firewood is no longer supplied at the lean-to by the car park; the café sells it. There is no direct public transport.

Levi and Inari further north

We found no day tours from Rovaniemi to either place, but both can be reached on your own. Levi is 170 km away, and the resort says there are frequent bus connections from Rovaniemi. Inari is 340 km away, about five hours by bus each way, so it needs at least one night. There you find Siida, the national museum of Sámi culture, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00 between 5 October 2026 and 31 May 2027. Its open-air museum is an 800-metre trail past around 50 buildings and structures, open in winter depending on the weather.

Inari lies in the Sámi Homeland, which in Finland covers the municipalities of Enontekiö, Inari and Utsjoki and the northern part of Sodankylä. Our page on Lapland culture explains the background.

Driving yourself in winter

From November to March, winter tyres are required whenever the weather or road conditions call for them. There are reindeer on the roads all over the herding area, so drive with care, and if you want to photograph them or the northern lights, stop only in a safe place and never in the middle of the road. Our page on getting around Rovaniemi has more on hire cars and buses.

Questions travellers ask

What is the best day trip from Rovaniemi in winter?

It depends on what you want to see. Korouoma has what Metsähallitus calls the most magnificent frozen waterfalls in Finland, Ranua has the country’s only polar bears, and the Kemi icebreakers take you out onto the frozen sea. For something short, the Arctic Circle Hiking Area is only about 25 km away.

Can I visit Korouoma without a tour?

Yes, by car. It is 100 km from Rovaniemi to the Koivuköngäs parking area and 115 km to Saukkovaara, both via road 81. There is no direct public transport, and a parking fee trial applies at Saukkovaara from 1 September 2026 until spring 2027.

Is the amethyst mine open in winter?

Yes. Lampivaara runs winter tours from 1 November 2026 to 18 April 2027, daily from 1 December to 28 March except on 24 December. In November there is one departure a day from Tuesday to Saturday.

Can I do Levi or Inari as a day trip from Rovaniemi?

Levi is 170 km away with frequent buses, so a long day is possible. Inari is 340 km away, about five hours by bus each way, which makes it a destination for at least one night.

Do I need my own winter clothing for these trips?

Usually not. The Korouoma tours in our list include overalls or winter clothing and boots, and so does the amethyst mine trip from the city centre. On the other amethyst trip, overalls and snow boots cost extra, so check the inclusions before you book.
