Snow hotel visits and igloo meals without an overnight stay
You do not need a room to walk through the Arctic SnowHotel or eat under a glass dome. Day visits, a snow sauna and igloo meals each fit into an afternoon or an evening from Rovaniemi.
The Arctic SnowHotel stands outside the city at Lehtojärvi, and the Santa Claus Village website puts it 35 km from the Village. Its hotel, restaurant and sauna are built from snow and ice, and visitors can come in from 15 December 2026 to 31 March 2027, daily from 10:00 to 20:00. The bookable visits take a few hours with a bus from the centre or from Santa Claus Village, so you eat or take a sauna there and sleep back in town. The glass igloo meals at Invisible Forest Lodge work the same way. You book a table in a dome, not a bed.
What a visit to the Arctic SnowHotel looks like
A basic visit gets you into the snow buildings and onto the lake shore, where kicksleds and a sledding hill are part of the entry. The operator gives the temperature inside as always between 0 and −5 °C, which is warmer than the January average of −10.3 °C at Rovaniemi airport, but you still stand on snow the whole time. Keep your boots, hat and mittens on, and see our page on what to wear in Rovaniemi for the layers.
The bus transfers stop at Korkalonkatu 26 in the centre and at the Piparina Day Cabins in Santa Claus Village. All three SnowHotel products say the same thing about these pick-ups: if you miss the bus, there is no refund. Leave enough time if you are coming from another activity in the Village.
| Option | Time needed | Included | Not included |
|---|---|---|---|
| SnowHotel visit | 3.5 hours with transfer | Entry, kicksleds and sledding hill, transfer if chosen | Drinks |
| SnowHotel with dinner | About 3 h 15 min (45 min bus each way, 45 min tour, 1 hour dinner) | Transfers, introduction, three-course dinner in the Ice Restaurant or the kota restaurant | Drinks |
| SnowHotel with snow sauna | 5–6 hours | Transfers, introduction, private snow sauna, Finnish sauna and outdoor jacuzzi | Food and alcohol |
Dinner in the Ice Restaurant
The operator describes its Ice Restaurant as the only one in Rovaniemi built entirely from snow and ice. The evening programme combines the bus, a guided look around the SnowHotel and a three-course dinner. If sitting on ice for an hour sounds too cold, you can choose the warm kota restaurant instead, where you eat by an open fire. Pick-ups were listed at 16:15 and 18:30 at the Piparina cabins in Santa Claus Village and at 16:50 and 19:00 in front of the Pisto Pub at Korkalonkatu 26. Times can change from season to season, so check them on the booking page before you plan the rest of the day.
The SnowHotel also hosts evening events. Visit Rovaniemi lists a New Year party at the Arctic SnowHotel for 2026/27, run by Safartica. Our page on Christmas and New Year has the other dates.
The snow sauna
Visit Finland describes the snow sauna at the Arctic SnowHotel as a sauna made entirely of snow and ice, with log saunas and hot tubs next to it and cold-water dipping included. It runs from mid-December to the end of March. The bookable session gives you private use of the snow sauna, a Finnish sauna and an outdoor jacuzzi, with transfers from the same two pick-up points. Food and alcohol are not part of it; dinner can be added.
The usual Finnish sauna manners apply. Visit Finland says Finns normally bathe naked, but a swimsuit or towel is fine, and in mixed saunas most people wear one. Drink plenty of water between rounds. If you want a wood-heated sauna with an ice hole closer to town, our sauna guide covers the options along the Kemijoki.

Glass igloo meals at Invisible Forest Lodge
Invisible Forest Lodge sells its glass domes for a meal only, so you can sit in one without booking a night. The dinner is private: a three-course Lappish menu with a welcome drink, served in the dome for about 1.5 hours. The menu on the product page lists forest mushroom soup, sautéed reindeer and warm Lappish cheese with cloudberry sauce. It is for guests aged 14 and over, with up to six people in one igloo. Inside, the operator gives a temperature of +15 to +21 °C and hands out blankets if you need them. Pick-up from town is available as an option.
In the aurora season, which Visit Rovaniemi gives as late August to early April, an evening in a glass dome gives you a view of the sky while you eat. The northern lights need a dark and clear sky, though, and no one can promise them. If seeing them is the main goal, read our page on the northern lights in Rovaniemi first.
The lunch is the quieter option: a private three-course meal in the same domes, up to five guests per igloo, in 75 minutes. In December it lands in the short window of daylight. On 21 December 2026 the sun rises in Rovaniemi at 11:08 and sets at 13:22, so a midday table is when you see the forest around the dome at its brightest. The lodge also sells an hour in its forest spa, with sauna and outdoor hot pools, followed by a warm three-course lunch.
Snow and ice in Santa Claus Village
Before the SnowHotel opens on 15 December, there is a closer place to see snow buildings. Snowman World in Santa Claus Village (Joulumaantie 15) has a Snow Restaurant, an Ice Bar, a snow labyrinth, tubing and ice skating. It is open from 6 December 2026 to 6 January 2027 from 10:00 to 20:00, then from 7 January to 17 March 2027 from 11:00 to 19:00, both weather permitting. Because it is part of the Village, it fits into a day at the Santa Claus Village.
Picking the right visit
- Travelling before 15 December: the SnowHotel is still closed, so choose an igloo meal or Snowman World, which opens on 6 December.
- With children under 14: the igloo dinner is out, but the SnowHotel visit includes the kicksleds and the sledding hill.
- Only one evening free: the dinner programme covers the SnowHotel and a meal in a little over three hours.
- For sauna fans: the snow sauna session takes most of an afternoon and needs a booking for mid-December to March.
- Short on time in December: an igloo lunch around midday uses the brightest hours of the day.
Opening dates and programmes are set season by season. In January 2025 the Arctic Art Festival held snow carving at the SnowHotel, and dates for the next festival had not been published when we checked in October 2026. Look at the operator's pages close to your trip for what is open.
