Rovaniemi in December
December is the month most visitors have in mind when they think of Rovaniemi. It is also the busiest and the darkest. Plan for both and the month works well.
December is the reason many people come to Rovaniemi. The town calls itself the Official Hometown of Santa Claus, and Santa Claus Village names late November to early January as its high season. Visit Rovaniemi reports more than half a million visitors a year at the village, and the airport shows how concentrated the rush is: Rovaniemi passed one million air passengers for the first time in 2025, and the millionth arrived on 19 December. With so many people coming in the same few weeks, December rewards planning more than any other month.
How busy it gets
The queues build at Santa Claus. Meeting times at Santa Claus Office cannot be booked in advance, everyone waits for their turn, and from late November to early January the office recommends arriving earlier in the day to be sure of getting in on the same day. A paid Christmas Express Pass lets families and groups skip the line through a separate fast-track entrance. At the office you are asked not to use your own camera; a photographer elf takes the pictures, and you can buy them afterwards. SantaPark, the cave park near the airport, says it gets lively close to Christmas and suggests coming in the morning or later in the evening.
The pressure reaches beyond the village. Visit Rovaniemi advises booking accommodation for Christmas and New Year early and recommends reserving restaurant tables well in advance, noting that opening hours may change over the holidays. In the busiest weeks of winter, flights reach Rovaniemi from up to 36 international airports, and a new twice-weekly route from London Gatwick starts on 4 December 2026. Many small-group tours take no more than eight guests, so the places on any one evening are limited.
What opens during the month
Santa Claus Office, the post office and the village itself are open all year, SantaPark since 31 October and Ounasvaara ski resort since 11 November. Several winter attractions start only in December. Dates are those published in October 2026; snow attractions depend on the weather, so check the official site before you go.

Short days and long twilight
On 1 December the sun is up from 10:13 to 13:58 in the city centre. By the solstice on 21 December 2026 that has shrunk to 11:08 until 13:22. Rovaniemi still sees the sun every day, though, and there is useful light before and after: civil twilight on the shortest day starts at 09:16 and lasts until 15:14. The Lapland safety brochure for travellers puts it plainly: keep the few hours of dim light in mind when you plan trips. In practice that means putting outdoor sightseeing and photography around midday and leaving the evenings for the northern lights and indoor plans. The page on daylight in Rovaniemi explains the blue twilight and why this is not a true polar night.

Snow is usually there. The median snow depth at the airport is 28 cm in mid-December and 38 cm by the end of the month, and in FMI data from 1998/99 to 2025/26 the lasting snow cover began on 12 November in the median winter. Some winters start late: in 2006 the snow only settled on 16 December. December averages −7.7 °C, with an average low of −10.6 °C, and on average 15 days of the month drop below −10 °C. Lakes and rivers usually freeze in December, but the river ice in the centre of Rovaniemi is dangerously thin and the current underneath is strong. Stay off it and leave ice activities to guided tours.
The Christmas calendar
Finland's Independence Day falls on Sunday 6 December 2026, a public holiday when many Finns watch the President's reception on television. The Lions Club holds its traditional Christmas market at Santasport on 5 and 6 December. Christmas Eve, 24 December, is the main event of the Finnish Christmas, with presents given that evening; 25 and 26 December are public holidays.
On 23 December Santa Claus sets off on his journey from Santa Claus Village with a public departure event that is also streamed live. The time for 2026 had not been published by October (in 2025 it started at 19:00). Over the holidays most shops keep shorter hours. Every Alko store closes at 13:00 on Christmas Eve, Arktikum is closed on 24 December, and on Christmas Day only bus line 8 runs, on its Sunday timetable. Ounasvaara opens 10:00–15:00 on Christmas Eve and 12:00–18:00 on Christmas Day. SantaPark stays open every day from 24 to 31 December. On New Year's Eve private fireworks are allowed only between 18:00 and 02:00. Our page on Christmas and New Year in Rovaniemi lists more opening times.
What to book early
Book in this order. Accommodation first: Rovaniemi has no central booking system, and Visit Rovaniemi singles out the Christmas and New Year period as the time to book early. Then any tour with a fixed small group, such as aurora evenings, husky safaris or the icebreaker day trip. Restaurant tables for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve come next. Santa himself needs no booking at the office, only patience or the fast-track pass.
Getting to Santa Claus Village, 8 km north of the centre, is simple. Local bus 8 runs all year, and from November to March the private Santa's Express and Airport Express buses also link the village, the centre and the airport. The bus company Linkkari suggests waving a reflector or a lit phone screen at the bus stop in the dark, so the driver sees you. The page on what to wear in winter covers warm clothing for the waiting.

Questions travellers ask
Is December a good time to visit Rovaniemi?
Yes, if you come for Santa Claus and the Christmas season, which run in full from late November to early January. The trade-offs are crowds, short days and higher demand for rooms, restaurants and tours, so it pays to book early.
How much daylight does Rovaniemi have in December?
On 1 December the sun is up from 10:13 to 13:58 in the city centre. On the shortest day, 21 December 2026, it rises at 11:08 and sets at 13:22. Twilight adds almost two hours on each side, so it is light enough to see from about 09:15 to 15:15.
Can I book a time to meet Santa Claus?
Not at Santa Claus Office, where meeting times cannot be booked in advance and everyone queues. In the busiest weeks the office recommends arriving earlier in the day. A paid fast-track pass lets families skip the queue, and at SantaPark the meeting with Santa is part of the entry ticket.
Is Santa Claus Village open on Christmas Day?
Santa Claus Village is open every day of the year, and Santa Claus Office lists daily hours of 08:00 to 20:00 from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The village is a group of more than 50 companies, so individual shops and restaurants keep their own holiday hours. Check the official site before you go.
Can you see the northern lights in Rovaniemi in December?
Yes, December is inside the season, which runs from late August to early April. What matters is a clear sky. FMI notes that the sky is often clear in hard frost, while milder weather tends to bring cloud.
