Questions travellers ask

When is the best time to visit Rovaniemi in winter?

It depends on what you come for. The Christmas season in Santa Claus Village peaks from late November to early January. The northern lights can be seen from late August to early April, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute names March and early April as the best time once the weather is taken into account. March also has the deepest snow, with a median of 77 cm at the airport in mid-March.

Is there a polar night in Rovaniemi?

Not in the strict sense. Even on the shortest day the sun rises briefly: on 21 December 2026 it comes up at 11:08 and sets at 13:22 in the city centre. With twilight before and after, it is light enough to see from about 09:16 to 15:14.

How cold does Rovaniemi get in winter?

January and February are the coldest months, both with an average of −10.3 °C at the airport station (1991–2020). The lowest temperature in that period was −38.1 °C in January 1999. Rural spots outside the city can be colder than the airport.

How far is Santa Claus Village from the city centre?

About 8 km north. City bus 8 runs there all year and takes about 30 minutes from the Ruokasenkatu stop, and from November to March the private Santa's Express also links the centre, the Village and the airport. The airport itself is only 3 km from the Village.

Can you see the northern lights from the city?

On strong nights, yes, even in the centre. Darker spots help, and Visit Rovaniemi recommends the Arctic Garden outside the Arktikum and Ounasvaara, both within walking distance. Do not stop along a road to watch, and stay off the river ice, which is dangerous in town.
