Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi
Free to enter, open every day of the year and 8 km north of the centre. Here is how a visit to Santa works, what else the village has, how to get there by bus and when the queues are shortest.
Santa Claus Village lies 8 km north of the centre of Rovaniemi, and highway E4 (E75) runs straight through its gateway. It is not one attraction run by one company. More than 50 businesses work together here as a cooperative, which is why opening hours differ from door to door. The village as a whole is open every day of the year and entry is free. Visit Rovaniemi puts the number of visitors at more than half a million a year, on some of its pages at over 700,000, so in December you share the paths with a lot of people.
From one cabin in 1950 to a village
The first building at the Arctic Circle was a cabin put up in 1950 for Eleanor Roosevelt. She came to Rovaniemi that summer to see how the rebuilding was going after the Lapland War, in which around 90 per cent of the buildings in the town centre had been destroyed in 1944, and she wanted to cross the Arctic Circle. The local architect Ferdinand Salokangas designed the cabin overnight, and the Roosevelt Cottage was completed on 11 June 1950. According to the village, it was the first attempt to get travellers to stop at the Arctic Circle for a coffee, a souvenir and a postcard with the Arctic Circle postmark.
Visit Rovaniemi dates Santa’s office here to 1985. The city owns the trademark “Official Hometown of Santa Claus”, and in 2026 the EU trademark office rejected an attempt to have it cancelled.
Meeting Santa in Santa Claus Office
Santa Claus Office stands in the heart of the village, next to the main square, at Joulumaantie 1. Santa receives visitors there every day of the year, and entry is free. You only pay if you want the photos, the video or one of the extra experiences.
Two rules catch many visitors out. You may not use your own camera during the meeting. A Photographer Elf takes photos and video instead, and afterwards you can buy a digital photo and video package or a printed A4 photo; the digital files stay available for download for 400 days. You also cannot bring your own presents to the meeting or pass on information beforehand.
Meeting times cannot be booked. If there is a queue, everyone waits their turn, and from late November to early January the office recommends coming earlier in the day to make sure you get in on the same day. The paid Christmas Express Pass lets families and groups skip the queue through a separate fast track.
| Period | Santa Claus Office |
|---|---|
| 24 October to 15 November 2026 | Daily 10:00–18:00 |
| 16 to 29 November 2026 | Daily 09:00–19:00 |
| 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 | Daily 08:00–20:00 |
| 4 January to 31 March 2027 | Daily 09:00–18:00 |
There are two more places to meet Santa without paying. In the village, he also welcomes visitors every day in the red Christmas House, open 09:00–20:00 from 23 November to 23 December and 08:00–22:00 on 24 and 25 December. In the city centre, Visit Rovaniemi lists the Santa Claus City Office on Lordi’s Square, open daily from November to March with free admission. The photo rule above is stated for Santa Claus Office only, so ask on the spot.
The marked Arctic Circle line
The Arctic Circle is marked on the ground in the central square, and a live webcam looks down on the spot. Stepping over it is the classic photo of a visit. If you want it on paper, the Arctic Circle certificate is sold in several places in the village, for example at the Arctic Circle Tourist Information and in the shop of Christmas House Santa Claus. The Tourist Information is open daily 08:00–19:00 in December and 09:00–18:00 in January.
Think of it as the marked line rather than the exact latitude. The village gives the latitude of the circle as 66°33′45.9″ north, while its own address coordinates are 66°32′37″ north, and the astronomical circle slowly moves north over the years. Our page on the Arctic Circle explains this in more detail.
Santa Claus’ Main Post Office
Visit Rovaniemi calls it the only official post office of Santa Claus. It is a full-service post office, so you can send parcels as well as cards, and everything posted here gets the special Arctic Circle postmark. Letters dropped into the red post box are held back and sent out in time for Christmas. Post from the mailbox outside the building also gets the Arctic Circle stamp. Around half a million letters reach Santa here every year, and for a fee you can order a Santa Claus Letter, which Santa sends before Christmas.
To write to Santa from home, use this address: Santa Claus, Santa Claus’ Main Post Office, Tähtikuja 1, 96930 Arctic Circle, Finland. Visit Rovaniemi adds that he cannot answer every letter. The post office is open daily 10:00–19:00 in November and 09:00–20:00 from 1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027. Hours from 7 January had not been published in mid-October 2026.

For a meal, the official list names among others Restaurant Arctic Eye (daily 17:00–22:00 until the end of March), Santa’s Salmon Place, Lapland Restaurant Kotahovi, Café-Restaurant Napatapuli and the Café of Mrs. Claus. The shops include Iittala, Marimekko, Pentik, Marttiini and the Christmas House shop, and the Santa Claus Office Shop is open every day of the year. There are cash machines in the village, but some places in Rovaniemi accept only cards or mobile payment.
Just outside, Santa’s Motor Park opposite the village runs ice karting, and Aurora Horses offers Finnhorse rides about 700 m away. Flying a drone over the village needs permission from the air traffic authorities, since the airport is less than 5 km away.
Would you rather ride through the forest than do a lap at a village farm? rovaniemi-reindeer.com lists the reindeer farms and sleigh rides around Rovaniemi.
Getting there by bus or taxi
City bus 8 runs all year between the railway station, the main city stop on Ruokasenkatu and the stop Napapiiri (Arctic Circle) at the village. The ride from Ruokasenkatu takes 30 minutes. On weekdays the bus leaves roughly every 45 minutes, the first one from the railway station at 05:50. At weekends there are only six departures from the station, at 11:15, 12:30, 13:45, 15:00, 16:15 and 17:30. The village is in fare zone A, like the centre. You can pay the driver in cash or by card, or use the Waltti Mobile app, which also shows where the buses are in real time. Check the return times in the timetable, especially on weekends.
From November to March the private Santa’s Express runs a circular route from the railway station via the city centre and SantaPark to the village and on to the airport. It does not take cash: buy a ticket online or pay the driver by card. Its winter timetable had not been published by mid-October 2026. A taxi covers the 8 km from the centre, and the village has its own taxi rank. The official taxi companies are Lähitaksi, Menevä, Santa Line and Taksi Rovaniemi, and Visit Rovaniemi suggests asking for the fare before you get in. More options are on our page about getting around Rovaniemi.

Beating the queues
The busiest weeks run from late November to early January. During that period Santa Claus Office opens at 08:00, and most other businesses in the village also keep longer hours. Arriving early is the simplest way to cut the wait. At weekends, though, the first bus 8 from the station only reaches the village at 11:50, so plan a taxi or the Santa’s Express if you want to be there first thing. If your day is tightly planned, the Christmas Express Pass is the paid alternative, and the guided walk in the list below takes care of the queue for you.
Plan around the light as well. On 21 December 2026 the sun rises at the village at 11:09 and sets at 13:20, with civil twilight from 09:16 to 15:13. Do the outdoor parts, such as the Arctic Circle line and the animals, around midday, and keep Santa Claus Office, the post office and the shops for the dark afternoon. The village is not a good place for the northern lights: the lights of the buildings make them hard to see from its centre.
Two dates bring extra crowds. The Countdown to Christmas, which opens the Christmas season, takes place on Saturday 7 November 2026 at 18:00 in the central square, lasts about 30 minutes and is free. On 23 December Santa sets off on his journey around the world from the village, with live music and a live stream; the details for 2026 were not yet out in October. Both are on our events calendar.
If snow matters to you, avoid the edges of the season. There is typically no snow at the village between mid-April and mid-November, and the first lasting snow arrives anywhere between late October and early December.

Questions travellers ask
Is Santa Claus Village free to visit?
Yes. Entry to the village is free, and so is entry to Santa Claus Office. You only pay if you want to buy the photos or video of your meeting with Santa, or for extras such as the Christmas Express Pass, rides and the attractions run by individual companies.
Can I take my own photos with Santa?
Not in Santa Claus Office. Guests are asked not to use their own cameras during the meeting, and a Photographer Elf takes photos and video, which you can buy as a digital package or a printed A4 photo. In SantaPark, the cave near the airport, your own photos with Santa are allowed.
How do I get to Santa Claus Village by bus?
City bus 8 runs all year from the railway station via the main stop on Ruokasenkatu to the stop Napapiiri at the village, about 30 minutes from Ruokasenkatu. On weekdays it runs roughly every 45 minutes, at weekends there are six departures from the station between 11:15 and 17:30. From November to March the private Santa’s Express also links the centre, SantaPark, the village and the airport.
When is Santa Claus Village busiest?
From late November to early January. In that period the operator of Santa Claus Office recommends arriving earlier in the day so you get in on the same day, and the office opens at 08:00.
Is Santa Claus Village open on Christmas Day?
The village is open every day of the year. Santa Claus Office lists daily hours of 08:00 to 20:00 from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with no special hours for the holidays, and Christmas House Santa Claus is open 08:00 to 22:00 on 24 and 25 December. Individual shops and restaurants set their own holiday hours.
Can I see the northern lights in Santa Claus Village?
It is possible between late August and early April, but the village itself says the lights of its buildings make it difficult to see them from the centre of the village, and it gives no guarantee. A darker spot away from the buildings works better.
