Snowmobile safaris in Rovaniemi

On a snowmobile safari you drive the machine yourself behind a guide. What decides the tour is how long you actually drive. The other thing to settle before the day is your driving licence.

Finland’s everyman’s rights let you walk, ski and even fish on frozen lakes without asking the landowner, but they do not allow you to drive a motor vehicle off the road. That is one reason most visitors to Rovaniemi try snowmobiling on a guided safari. The safety brochure of the Lapland rescue services gives the same advice from a different angle: if you have never driven a snowmobile, start with a guided tour.

On a safari you drive yourself and follow the guide in a line of machines. The tours start in the centre or with a pick-up from your hotel, and they differ mostly in one number: how much of the time you spend driving.

Driving time against tour length

The listings give the total duration first and the driving time further down. The difference is the transfer, getting into the thermal suit, the briefing and the stops.

Two people normally share one snowmobile and swap at the handlebars, so each of you drives roughly half of the stated time. On the reindeer farm safari the listing gives a top speed of about 35 km/h. If you want to drive the whole time, several operators let you book a machine for yourself at extra cost. Most listings state driving time rather than distance, so compare tours by the hours behind the handlebars.

Licence, age and the excess

Bring your driving licence. The listings ask drivers for a valid licence, and the rules can be strict. On the evening safari from Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park only the physical category B card counts, so a photo of your licence or a temporary paper will not do. On the ice fishing safari drivers must be at least 18. Travellers without a licence can still join some tours as passengers. On the evening safari they ride in a sleigh.

Operators also set an excess for damage to the snowmobile, which applies per machine. Several of them offer an insurance waiver that lowers it. Read the terms in the listing before the day, not at the start of the tour.

Driving or sitting in the sleigh

Read the title closely when a tour mentions a sleigh or sledge. On the aurora sled ride from Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park you sit in a sleigh pulled by a snowmobile for about two hours while the group looks for the northern lights, and you do not drive at all. It suits travellers without a licence or anyone who would rather watch the sky. Children cannot join that tour when the temperature is below −20 °C. If driving is the point, pick one of the safaris in the table above. Other evening trips are on our page about the northern lights in Rovaniemi.

Season and light

Snowmobile safaris run on snow, and the main season in Rovaniemi is December to April. Lapland Welcome, for example, drives from 1 December to 20 April. Apukka runs early-winter tours in November, at first on stored snow, and notes that reliable natural snow comes in December. At the airport the median snow depth is 19 cm at the end of November and 77 cm in mid-March (1991–2020).

Light changes the tour as much as snow. On 21 December 2026 the sun is up from 11:08 to 13:22 only, so in December even a midday safari runs in low light. The evening safaris go out after dark, and on a clear night the northern lights can appear, though no operator can promise them. By 1 March the sun is up for almost ten hours, and the snow is at its deepest in the middle of the month.

Rivers and lakes

Two rivers meet in Rovaniemi, the Ounasjoki and the Kemijoki, and they freeze differently because their water levels change. The city’s guideline is that snowmobiling on river ice needs at least 20–25 cm of ice, preferably strong black ice. In the centre, between the Jätkänkynttilä bridge and the railway bridge, the city calls the ice dangerous throughout the winter. Safaris use routes the operator knows. The ice fishing safari, for instance, stops on a frozen lake. Never take a machine onto the ice on your own.

Cold at speed

January and February average −10.3 °C at Rovaniemi airport, and on a moving snowmobile the wind adds to the cold. The Lapland safety brochure warns that wind can cause frostbite quickly even just below zero. Visit Finland notes that guided safaris typically include clothing rental, and the snowmobile tours we checked include a thermal overall, boots and mittens. Keep your own woollen base layer and a mid layer underneath.

Passengers get colder than drivers because they sit still. That is why one family tour carries children under 1.40 m in a heated sleigh. More ideas for younger travellers are on our page about Rovaniemi with kids.

Questions travellers ask

Do I need a driving licence to drive a snowmobile in Rovaniemi?

Yes. The operators ask drivers for a valid driving licence, and the evening safari from Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park accepts only the physical category B card, not a photo or a temporary licence. Passengers do not need one.

How long do you actually drive on a snowmobile safari?

On the tours below, between one hour and 2.5 hours. A two-hour tour includes 1–1.5 hours of driving, a four-hour evening safari about two hours. If you share the snowmobile, each of you drives about half of that time.

Can I have a snowmobile to myself?

The standard is two people per snowmobile. Several operators let you book a machine for yourself at extra cost. Check the option when you book.

Can children come on a snowmobile safari?

Yes, as passengers. On the family tour below, children under 1.40 m ride in a heated sleigh pulled behind the snowmobile. Another family safari adds a track where children drive small snowmobiles themselves.

Can I drive a snowmobile on the river in Rovaniemi?

Not on your own. The city warns that the river ice in the centre is dangerous all winter, and its guideline for snowmobiling on river ice is at least 20–25 cm of ice. Leave the route to the operator.
