October is autumn with aurora nights, December belongs to Santa Claus, and March has the deepest snow with long days. Here is what each month from October to April brings.

Rovaniemi lies a few kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) counts on winter lasting around seven months in Lapland. Between October and April the town changes more than most places in Europe. The average temperature at the airport falls from just above zero in October to −10.3 °C in January and February. The sun is up for more than eleven hours on 1 October, for two hours and fourteen minutes on 21 December and for over thirteen and a half hours again on 1 April. Snow usually arrives in November and is deepest in March.

Rovaniemi month by month

Temperatures are the FMI long-term averages for the airport station north of the centre (1991–2020). Snow depth is the median on the 15th of the month at the same station. The daylight column shows sunrise to sunset on the first day of each month in the 2026/27 season, calculated for the city centre.

October and early November

October is autumn with a chance of winter. The average temperature is 0.8 °C, and on 31 October the median snow depth at the airport is a single centimetre. FMI puts the first full snow cover at the rural Apukka station east of town around 21 October in a typical year, but that first snow often melts again. We counted the lasting snow cover in FMI open data for the winters 1998/99 to 2025/26: in the median winter it began on 12 November. In 2023 it came on 11 October, in 2006 not until 16 December.

The nights are dark enough for the northern lights from late August, so aurora trips run long before there is snow. A few operators make use of the gap with formats that only work now, such as floating on a lake that has not frozen yet or husky rides with a wheeled cart instead of a sled. SantaPark, the Christmas theme park in a cave near the airport, opens its winter season on 31 October 2026.

Mid-November to early January

These are the weeks when Rovaniemi is busiest. Santa Claus Village opens the Christmas season with its Countdown to Christmas event on Saturday 7 November 2026, and Santa Claus Office describes late November to early January as its busiest season. Ounasvaara ski resort, almost in the centre of town, starts its winter season on 11 November. Meanwhile the days shrink fast: seven and a half hours of sun on 1 November, less than four on 1 December.

December is the darkest month, but the sun does not disappear. On the shortest day, 21 December 2026, it rises in the city centre at 11:08 and sets at 13:22. Civil twilight runs from 09:16 to 15:14, which gives you about six hours in which you can see the landscape without streetlights. Our page on daylight and the polar night explains why Rovaniemi does not have a true polar night. December averages −7.7 °C, and the icebreaker cruises from Kemi begin: the Arktis sails from 1 December, the Sampo from 18 December 2026. For the peak weeks in detail, read Rovaniemi in December.

Mid-January and February

The Christmas season in Finland ends with Epiphany on 6 January, and the big crowds leave with it. What follows is the coldest part of the winter. January and February share the same average at the airport, and FMI counts on average 20 days in January and 18 in February with a low below −10 °C. Hard frost comes in spells. In FMI measurements from the winters 1998/99 to 2025/26, January had about seven days a year at −20 °C or colder, and the airport reached −30 °C in 8 of those 28 winters. The lowest reading in the period 1991–2020 was −38.1 °C in January 1999. The countryside around town can be much colder: the rural Apukka station recorded −47.5 °C that same month.

The light comes back quickly. By 1 February the sun is up for more than six hours, by 1 March for almost ten. The snow keeps building, from a median of 47 cm in mid-January to 66 cm in mid-February. The 62nd Arctic Lapland Rally, a round of the Finnish Rally Championship on snowy roads, runs from 28 to 30 January 2027. SantaPark closes for the season on 23 January.

March and April

March gives you snow and daylight at the same time. At the airport the snow peaks around mid-March with a median of 77 cm, and the average temperature rises to −5.6 °C. FMI names March and early April as the best time to see the northern lights in northern Finland once the weather is taken into account, because spring nights are more often clear. Easter falls on 26–29 March 2027, and Ounasvaara keeps longer opening hours over those four days.

April is the end of the season. The aurora season closes in early April as the nights grow light, and the Sampo makes its last cruise on 3 April. Snow is still deep in mid-April with a median of 64 cm, but it goes quickly: by 30 April the median is down to 27 cm. Ounasvaara closes its slopes on 17 April 2027.

How to choose

Start with the one thing you want most. For Santa Claus and the Christmas atmosphere, travel between mid-November and early January and book early. For the northern lights without the Christmas crowds, aim for late January to March. For husky, reindeer and snowmobile trips with daylight to see the forest, March is the strongest month, with the deepest snow and almost ten hours of sun at its start. October and early November suit travellers who want aurora evenings and autumn formats and can do without snow.

Tour formats for every part of the aurora season are compared on rovaniemi-northernlights.com.
