Rovaniemi itineraries for two to five days in winter
In December the sun is up for little more than two hours in Rovaniemi. These plans put the outdoor trips into that window, save museums and SantaPark for the dark afternoon, and keep the late evening free for the northern lights.
The plans below assume you stay in or near the city centre, arrive the evening before Day 1 and travel in the dark half of the season, from late November to January. They use only tours with known durations and places with published opening hours for winter 2026/27. If you come in February or March, the same plans work with more room to spare, because the days grow long quickly. For the question of how long to stay in the first place, see how many days you need in Rovaniemi.
Plan around the light
Rovaniemi has no true polar night. The centre lies just south of the Arctic Circle, and on 21 December 2026 the sun rises at 11:08 and sets at 13:22. Civil twilight lasts from 09:16 to 15:14, so you get about six hours in which you can see the landscape without artificial light. Our page on daylight and kaamos explains why.
| Date | Twilight begins | Sunrise | Sunset | Twilight ends |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 December 2026 | 08:45 | 10:13 | 13:58 | 15:27 |
| 21 December 2026 | 09:16 | 11:08 | 13:22 | 15:14 |
| 1 January 2027 | 09:16 | 10:59 | 13:43 | 15:26 |
| 1 February 2027 | 08:14 | 09:19 | 15:43 | 16:48 |
| 1 March 2027 | 06:40 | 07:33 | 17:28 | 18:21 |
Three rules follow from this. Put anything you want to see outdoors, such as the sleds, the forest or the animals at Ranua, between about 10:00 and 15:00. Use the dark afternoon for indoor sights: the Arktikum is open daily until 18:00 from December to February, and SantaPark until 18:00. Keep the late evening free, because Visit Rovaniemi says the northern lights are most often seen between 22:00 and 02:00.
Two days
Two days cover the Arctic Circle, one animal ride, one aurora evening and the centre.
| Day | Morning and midday | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Santa Claus Office, Arctic Circle line, post office | Reindeer ride at the farm in the village, bus back | Northern lights tour by van (about 5 hours) |
| 2 | Riverside walk, Jätkänkynttilä Bridge, Arctic Garden | Arktikum (at least an hour) | Lordi's Square and the Santa Claus City Office |
Day 1 at the Arctic Circle
Take bus 8 from Ruokasenkatu to the Napapiiri stop, a 30-minute ride. From 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 the Santa Claus Office opens daily at 08:00. Meeting times cannot be booked, and in the busy season the office recommends coming early. Your own cameras are not allowed during the meeting; an elf photographer takes the pictures. Afterwards cross the Arctic Circle line marked on the central square and send a card from Santa Claus' Main Post Office, where everything gets the Arctic Circle postmark. Around midday, when there is most light, the reindeer farm inside the village offers rides of 2 to 3 km with about 30 minutes on the sled. Head back to town in the afternoon and rest before the evening tour.
The northern lights tour leaves from Valtakatu 26 in the centre and lasts about five hours in 4x4 vans. Booking it for the first night gives you the second evening in reserve if the sky is cloudy.

Day 2 in the centre
Spend the light hours outside. Walk along the riverbank to the Jätkänkynttilä Bridge, the 320-metre bridge from 1989 whose shape comes from the lumberjack's candle, a torch carved from wood. Behind the Arktikum the Arctic Garden runs down to the Ounasjoki, free to enter and in winter mainly a walking path. Stay off the river ice: the city warns that it is dangerous all winter between Jätkänkynttilä and the railway bridge. When the light goes, go into the Arktikum, where the exhibitions sit underground below the 172-metre glass tube. Plan at least an hour. In the evening, the Santa Claus City Office on Lordi's Square is open daily from November to March, with free admission.

Three days
A third day adds a real sled trip and SantaPark. Follow the two-day plan and add:
Day 3 with huskies and SantaPark
Book a self-drive husky safari for the middle of the day. The one we list takes about four hours with transfers, and you drive your own team over 6 to 10 km with 30 to 50 minutes on the sled, followed by a barbecue. With a late-morning start you are back in the early afternoon, about when the light fades. Then go to SantaPark, 7 km from the centre and a stop on the Santa's Express route. Its winter season runs from 31 October 2026 to 23 January 2027, and in December it is open until 18:00. The park itself says it gets busy close to Christmas and suggests the morning or later in the day for a calmer visit. Unlike the Santa Claus Office, it lets you take your own photos with Santa.

Four days
The fourth day buys a trip out of town and a second chance at the aurora. Follow the three-day plan and add:
Day 4 at Ranua Wildlife Park
Ranua lies 80 km from Rovaniemi and has Finland's only polar bears, three females, along with about 50 other Arctic and northern species. The park opens daily at 10:00 and currently closes at 16:00, and it has no lighting. In December that matters more than anywhere else in the plan: choose a minibus tour that leaves in the morning, so that your three hours in the park fall in the brief daylight. The tour we list takes about five hours, with roughly 70 minutes each way.
Use the evening as your reserve night for the northern lights. If the tour on Day 1 was cloudy, book another, or try one of the public viewing spots Visit Rovaniemi recommends: the Arctic Garden outside the Arktikum, or Ounasvaara, within walking distance of the centre. Never stop along a road to watch, and keep off frozen lakes and rivers.

Five days
With five days you can add the longest day trip from Rovaniemi. Follow the four-day plan and add:
Day 5 on the icebreaker
The icebreaker Sampo sails from Kemi from 18 December 2026 to 3 April 2027. The tour from Rovaniemi takes 10 to 11 hours with the bus, and the cruise itself 3.5 to 4 hours, with a guided tour of the 1960 ship and ice floating in a survival suit. That fills the whole day, including the short daylight, so do not plan anything else. If your trip falls before 18 December, use the day for a snowmobile safari or a sauna evening instead, and see our day trips from Rovaniemi for other options such as the frozen waterfalls of Korouoma.
Holidays and closed days
Some opening hours change around Christmas, which matters on a short trip. The Arktikum is closed on 24 December 2026, and from 1 March 2027 it closes on Mondays. Korundi, home of the Rovaniemi Art Museum, is closed every Monday and on 24 and 25 December. SantaPark opens from 09:00 to 18:00 every day from 24 to 31 December. On 25 December only bus 8 runs in the city, on its Sunday timetable.

Questions travellers ask
Is there polar night in Rovaniemi?
Not in the strict sense. The centre lies just south of the Arctic Circle, and on 21 December 2026 the sun rises at 11:08 and sets at 13:22. Even at the marked line in Santa Claus Village it is briefly above the horizon that day. With twilight, there are about six hours of usable light.
Can I do Santa Claus Village and a northern lights tour on the same day?
Yes. Spend the morning and midday at the village, take bus 8 back to town in the afternoon and join an evening aurora tour. The northern lights are most often seen between 22:00 and 02:00.
When should I visit the Santa Claus Office to avoid queues?
Meeting times cannot be booked, and in the busy season from late November to early January the office recommends arriving earlier in the day. From 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 it opens daily at 08:00.
Which attractions are closed on Christmas Eve?
The Arktikum is closed on 24 December 2026, and the Korundi art museum on 24 and 25 December. SantaPark is open from 09:00 to 18:00 every day from 24 to 31 December, and the Santa Claus Office is open every day.
Is Ranua Wildlife Park worth a day trip in December?
It is the only place in Finland with polar bears, but the park has no lighting and closes at 16:00. In December choose a tour that leaves in the morning so you are there in daylight.
